Expert road riders seek out its heart‑pounding hills, sharp curves, and unparalleled coastal views for serious training and unforgettable scenery. If you’re planning a ride, build in time for photo stops and make sure your bike and fitness level are ready for long climbs and changing weather along Highway 1 near Big Sur.

Rocky Ridge & Old Coast Road 

For a true mountain biking challenge, head to the 10–20% grades of Rocky Ridge Trail in Garrapata State Park. These steep stretches reward you with sweeping views and rugged, technical riding. If you prefer something more moderate, the historic Old Coast Road between Bixby Bridge and Andrew Molera State Park offers dirt, forest, and vistas without quite as much punishment, making it a great option for confident intermediate riders.

Other Mountain Biking Spots 

Beyond those marquee routes, mountain biking is also allowed in several other beautiful spots around Big Sur. You can explore the Pfeiffer Ridge Trail in Andrew Molera State Park, tackle Cone Peak Road between Nacimiento Summit and Cone Peak for big‑mountain scenery, or enjoy the lakeside terrain at Lake San Antonio. Before you go, check current conditions, any seasonal restrictions, and consider whether you need a permit or to review local guidelines like the district’s special event permit.
