Mountain Biking in Big sur

Big Sur’s terrain is a dramatic mix of steep coastal bluffs, redwood canyons, and chaparral-covered ridgelines. Climbs are long and punchy, descents can be loose and technical, and weather shifts quickly with fog, wind, and sun in the same ride. The reward is sweeping ocean vistas and quiet forest singletrack that feel worlds away from the highway.

Riders typically split time between challenging fire roads, mixed-use trails, and demanding connectors that test fitness and bike handling. Expect narrow paths, exposure, and occasional hike‑a‑bike on rugged sections. A capable bike with low gearing, grippy tires, and strong brakes is essential, along with plenty of water and layers for coastal microclimates.

Safety and stewardship matter here. Check current trail access and seasonal closures, yield to hikers and equestrians, and pack out everything you bring. Start early to avoid afternoon winds, ride with a partner on remote routes, and let someone know your plan. For many, Big Sur is a bucket‑list ride: tough, unforgiving, and unforgettable.
